The Pomeranian is a magnificent small family pet. He is very alert in character.

These little dogs definitely love to be pampered and petted by their owner's. At an average size of 4 1/2 pounds (male) or 5 1/2 pounds (female) he makes a faithful and devoted little addition to the family.

They do need daily exercise but can get it indoors or outside on a nice stroll or playing a fun game of fetch.  They exhibit intelligence in expression, are buoyant in deportment, very inquisitive by nature, cocky, commanding, and very animated as he gaits about.

These dogs are not meant to live outdoors due to their need for human companionship as well as their inability to withstand very hot or very cold temperatures.

The Pomeranian practically has two coats to care for; a short fluffy undercoat and a longer straight topcoat which covers the whole body. Actually it is actually quite easy to care for; a regular brushing will keep the coat in good condition.

They are better overall with adults and older, more mature, children and are totally devoted to their favourite human.

This breed descended from the sled dogs of Iceland and Lapland and boasts that distinctive feathered tail that fans forward and over the back. Believe it or not, the original Pomeranian dogs weighed as much as 30 pounds! It is said that the Japanese Spitz carries the closest resemblance to the Pom's true ancestors.

At some point in time these dogs were then purposely bred down in size. Hence, we now have that miniature sled dog from an area probably located in Pomerania; hence the dog breed’s name “Pomeranian”.
